Your result is expressed as a band score. The higher the score, the higher your level of English proficiency.

The official scale includes the following levels:

IELTS Score

Official Description

Approximate CEFR Level

9.0

Expert user

C2

8.0–8.5

Very good user

C1-C2

7.0–7.5

Good user

C1

6.0–6.5

Competent user

B2

5.0–5.5

Modest user

B1–B2

4.0–4.5

Limited user

B1

3.0–3.5

Extremely limited user

A2

2.0–2.5

Intermittent user

A1–A2

1.0

Non-user

–

0

Did not attempt the test

–

It is important to remember, however, that IELTS and CEFR are two different assessment systems. There is no exact one-to-one conversion between the two. Therefore, assigning a specific IELTS band score to a CEFR level such as B2 or C1 should be treated as an approximation.

It is also worth noting that the official IELTS descriptors primarily refer to whole band scores such as 5, 6, 7 or 8. Half-band scores, such as 5.5 or 6.5, indicate a level between two neighbouring bands.

IELTS Scores 5.5–8.0 and What They Mean

IELTS 5.5 – Partial Proficiency

A score of 5.5 falls between modest user (5.0) and competent user (6.0).

A person with this score already has functional knowledge of English and can cope with many everyday situations. At the same time, their communication may contain quite a few errors, and more complex language can still be challenging.

What Does IELTS 5.5 Mean in Practice?

With a score of 5.5, you can generally:

understand the overall meaning of most conversations and texts;

communicate in typical everyday situations;

have conversations about familiar topics;

communicate basic information related to your industry or area of specialisation;

experience difficulties with details, fast speech, idiomatic language and more complex structures;

make grammatical, lexical and pronunciation errors relatively frequently.

This is a score that demonstrates partial proficiency in English, but not yet complete confidence in more demanding situations.

An IELTS score of 5.5 may be sufficient for some preparatory courses and selected educational or immigration pathways. However, you should always check the specific requirements of the university, programme or institution you are applying to.

IELTS 6.0 – Competent User

A score of 6.0 corresponds to the competent user level.

According to the IELTS descriptor, a person at this level generally has an effective command of English, despite some inaccuracies, inappropriate language choices or misunderstandings.

What Does IELTS 6.0 Mean in Practice?

With a score of 6.0, you can generally:

understand the main ideas of lectures, articles and conversations;

communicate relatively confidently in familiar situations;

write clear and logical texts;

discuss familiar topics in conversation;

use and understand more complex language, particularly when the topic is familiar.

However, this does not mean that your English is error-free. You may still experience difficulties with precision, grammar, vocabulary or understanding less familiar situations.

IELTS 6.0 is a common admissions requirement, although requirements vary depending on the university, course, country and type of programme.

IELTS 6.5 – Solid B2

IELTS 6.5 falls between competent user (6.0) and good user (7.0).

It is an important score for many IELTS candidates because it demonstrates a solid level of language competence and greater confidence in using English than a score of 6.0.

It can broadly be associated with the upper end of B2, although there is no exact or universally applicable conversion between IELTS and CEFR.

What Does IELTS 6.5 Mean in Practice?

A person with a score of 6.5 can generally:

communicate effectively in everyday situations;

understand more complex texts and spoken language;

function in an academic or professional environment;

present arguments and explain their point of view;

write longer, logically structured texts;

still make mistakes when dealing with highly complex structures or abstract topics.

At this level, English is no longer simply a tool for coping with everyday situations. It becomes a tool for study, work and more demanding communication.

A score of 6.5 is a very common requirement for university admissions and academic programmes. However, specific requirements may also include minimum scores for individual sections of the exam.

IELTS 7.0 – Good User

A score of 7.0 corresponds to the good user level.

This represents a very good command of English. A person with this score has an operational command of the language and can function effectively in situations that require an understanding of more complex content.

IELTS 7.0 is broadly associated with C1 on the CEFR scale.

What Does IELTS 7.0 Mean in Practice?

With a score of 7.0, you can generally:

participate confidently in conversations and discussions;

understand complex texts, lectures and arguments;

recognise meanings conveyed through context, rather than only information stated explicitly;

write well-organised and coherent texts;

present and develop your own arguments effectively;

communicate in academic and professional environments.

Errors can still occur, but they are usually occasional and do not interfere significantly with communication.

For this reason, IELTS 7.0 is often required for more demanding academic programmes, certain professions and pathways where a high level of English proficiency is expected.

IELTS 8.0 – Very Good User

A score of 8.0 corresponds to the very good user level.

This represents a very high level of proficiency. A person with this score has an almost complete command of English, although occasional minor errors or inaccuracies may still occur, particularly in unfamiliar situations.

What Does IELTS 8.0 Mean in Practice?

With a score of 8.0, you can generally:

communicate confidently in a wide range of situations;

understand complex texts and spoken language with little difficulty;

deal effectively with nuances of meaning;

use specialised and advanced vocabulary with ease;

handle detailed arguments well;

express your ideas precisely, both orally and in writing.

However, a score of 8.0 does not mean absolute perfection. The official descriptor for this level allows for occasional, unsystematic errors, particularly in unfamiliar situations.

An IELTS score of 8.0 therefore indicates a very high level of English proficiency, broadly corresponding to C1-C2.

5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0 or 8.0 – What Is the Difference?

At first glance, the difference between a score of 6.0 and 7.0 may seem relatively small. In practice, however, it represents a move from competent user to good user – in other words, significantly greater control of the language and a stronger ability to deal with complex communication.

Score

What Does It Mean?

5.5

You can understand the overall meaning and handle basic communication, but you make quite a few errors.

6.0

You can communicate effectively in most familiar situations, despite some inaccuracies.

6.5

You have solid language competence and can function effectively in academic or professional environments.

7.0

You handle complex language, arguments and communication in demanding situations well.

8.0

You use English very confidently and precisely, with only occasional errors.

Is IELTS 6.5 B2 or C1?

This is one of the most common questions about the IELTS scoring scale.

The safest way to describe it is that IELTS 6.5 is around the upper end of B2, while a score of 7.0 is generally associated with C1. However, this should not be treated as an exact conversion.

IELTS and CEFR were designed for somewhat different purposes and use different approaches to describing language proficiency. Therefore, a person with an IELTS score of 6.5 will not necessarily have exactly the same level of ability across all language skills.

This is particularly important because IELTS assesses four separate skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

Does Your Overall IELTS Score Tell the Whole Story?

No.

In addition to your overall score (Overall Band Score), you receive an individual score for each section of the exam:

Listening,

Reading,

Writing,

Speaking.

For example, you could achieve an Overall 6.5 while receiving 7.0 in Reading, 7.0 in Listening, 6.0 in Speaking and 6.0 in Writing.

That is why, if you are taking IELTS for a specific purpose – for example, university admission, employment or immigration – you should check not only the required overall score, but also whether the institution requires a minimum score in each individual section.

What Is a Good IELTS Score?

There is no single answer to this question. What counts as a “good” score depends primarily on why you are taking the exam.

5.5 – demonstrates basic functional proficiency, but may not be sufficient for more demanding academic purposes.

6.0 – indicates competent use of English and may meet the requirements of some programmes.

6.5 – a very practical target for people planning to study or work in an English-speaking environment.

7.0 – a high score, generally associated with C1-level proficiency.

8.0 – a very high level of English, allowing you to function confidently in complex situations.

It is important to remember, however, that requirements are set individually by universities, employers, organisations and government authorities. Achieving a particular score does not automatically mean that you meet the requirements of a specific institution.

Summary

The IELTS scoring scale helps assess how effectively you can use English in a range of situations. IELTS 5.5 indicates partial proficiency and the ability to handle basic communication, while 6.0 represents competent use of English. A score of 6.5 demonstrates a solid level of proficiency that allows you to function with increasing confidence in academic and professional environments.

IELTS 7.0 corresponds to the good user level and is generally associated with C1, while 8.0 indicates a very high level of proficiency, approaching full command of the language.

Most importantly, there is no single universally “good” IELTS score. A good score is one that meets the requirements of the university, programme, employer or institution you are applying to.

If you are preparing for the exam, it is therefore worth starting not with the question “What is a good IELTS score?”, but with a more practical one: “What IELTS score do I need for my specific purpose?”

FAQ

How is the Overall Band Score rounded?
The Overall Band Score is the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest whole or half band. An average ending in .25 is rounded up to .5, and one ending in .75 is rounded up to the next whole band. For example, an average of 6.25 gives an Overall 6.5, and 6.75 gives 7.0.

Do IELTS Academic and General Training use the same scale?
Yes, both are scored on the 0–9 band scale. However, they differ in the content of Reading and Writing. In Reading, the conversion of correct answers into bands is different: in General Training you usually need more correct answers for the same band.

Can an IELTS score be converted into a Cambridge certificate?
No. They are separate exams: an IELTS score does not give you a Cambridge English certificate, and a Cambridge certificate does not replace IELTS.
