What is IELTS?

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the world’s most widely recognized English language proficiency test for study, work, and migration. It assesses four key language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking, and is accepted by over 11,000 institutions worldwide.

IELTS Modules: Academic and General Training

General Training Module
This module is intended for those planning to work or study below degree level. It focuses on communication skills in everyday and workplace contexts, emphasizing the practical use of English in real-life situations.

  • Purpose: Ideal for people planning to migrate, enter the workforce, or study in a non-academic setting (e.g. vocational training).
  • Reading Section: More practical and based on everyday situations like advertisements or instructions.

Both modules assess the same four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. However, Reading and Writing sections differ:

  • IELTS Academic: Reading includes three long, academic texts; Writing involves interpreting graphs/diagrams and writing an essay.
  • IELTS General Training: Reading includes diverse, everyday texts; Writing includes a letter and an essay on general topics.

Choosing the right module is essential and should align with the requirements of your chosen university, employer, or immigration office.

Who Should Take the IELTS?

IELTS is essential for anyone who wants to confirm their English skills for education, work, or immigration in English-speaking countries.

  • Students: Required for university applications in countries like the UK, Australia, or Canada. A score between 6.0 and 7.5 is often required.
  • Professionals: Many international companies require proof of advanced English. An IELTS certificate opens global career paths.
  • Migrants: General Training is often mandatory for immigration processes (e.g., Canada’s Express Entry or Australia’s Skilled Migrant Visa).

Structure of the IELTS Exam

Listening (30 minutes)
Four audio recordings (conversations, academic lectures, discussions). Questions involve gap-filling, multiple choice, and summaries.

Reading (60 minutes)
Three texts with questions. Module-dependent:

  • Academic: Complex, academic texts.
  • General Training: Simpler, everyday documents like letters or ads.

Writing (60 minutes)
Two tasks:

  • Academic: Describe visual data (charts, diagrams) and write an essay.
  • General Training: Write a formal/informal letter and an essay.

Speaking (11–14 minutes)
Face-to-face interview with three parts:

  1. Introduction and general questions (work, hobbies, etc.).
  2. Individual long turn – candidate speaks on a given topic.
  3. Discussion based on the same topic.

Each part tests different aspects of communication, from everyday interactions to structured argumentation.
