The points-based immigration system – what is it?
Since January 1, 2021, the UK has implemented a points-based immigration system. To obtain a Skilled Worker visa, applicants must score at least 70 points. Ten of these points are awarded for demonstrating English language proficiency at B1 level (according to the CEFR scale). The remaining points can be earned through having a job offer from a licensed sponsor and meeting minimum salary thresholds.
What level of English is required for a UK visa?
The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) clearly outlines the language proficiency levels expected from visa applicants:
- B1 (Intermediate) – the candidate should understand the main points of conversations related to work, education, and leisure, and be able to express themselves clearly on familiar topics.
- B2 (Upper-Intermediate) – the candidate should be able to communicate fluently and spontaneously with native speakers and produce detailed written texts, even on abstract topics.
For most work-related visas, such as the Skilled Worker visa, B1 is sufficient. However, educational institutions may require a higher level, such as B2 or even C1 (Advanced).
What IELTS scores are required for UK visa applications?
The level of English required for a UK visa depends on the specific visa type and is based on the CEFR framework. Detailed and up-to-date requirements are available on the official GOV.UK website.
Below is a summary of IELTS for UKVI score requirements:
- A1 CEFR level – a pass in the IELTS Life Skills A1 test, which assesses only speaking and listening skills, is required,
- A2 CEFR level – a pass in the IELTS Life Skills A2 test (speaking and listening only) is needed,
- B1 CEFR level – there are two options to meet this requirement:
- A pass in the IELTS Life Skills B1 (Listening & Speaking) test,
- A minimum score of 4.0 in each section (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) of the IELTS for UKVI (General Training),
- B2 CEFR level – at least 5.5 in each of the four components of the IELTS for UKVI test is required,
- C1 CEFR level – a minimum of 7.0 in each of the four sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) is necessary.
