Date of the last update: 28.09.2026

You don’t have to retake the entire IELTS test to improve one weaker result. IELTS One Skill Retake is a solution that allows you to resit just one chosen component of the exam – Reading, Listening, Writing, or Speaking – and improve that score, without affecting the rest of your exam results.

Will your university or institution accept your One Skill Retake result?

Before choosing One Skill Retake, make sure to check whether the institution you’re submitting your results to accepts this option – not all organizations and offices recognize OSR.

Why is it worth taking One Skill Retake?

This solution is ideal for anyone who isn’t satisfied with their result in one specific component of the test. Instead of risking a lower score on the parts you did well in by retaking the entire exam, you can improve just what needs improving – faster, cheaper, and with less stress.

FAQ

Does the One Skill Retake result replace my original score?
No. After One Skill Retake you receive a new Test Report Form with the new score for the retaken section and a recalculated Overall Band Score. Your original report remains valid. You decide which one to submit to an institution.

What if I get a lower score in One Skill Retake?
You lose nothing. Your original result still stands and you can keep using it. You only use the new report if it works in your favour.

Is One Skill Retake available for both IELTS Academic and General Training?
Yes. You retake the section in the same version of the test you originally sat. If you took IELTS Academic, you retake an IELTS Academic section.

Can I retake the Speaking section?
Yes. One Skill Retake covers all four sections, including Speaking. As in the full exam, it is a face-to-face conversation with an examiner.

How should I prepare for One Skill Retake?
The task format is the same as in the full exam, so focus only on the section you are retaking. First analyse which assessment criteria cost you points, then practise them with a teacher. With a 60-day window, one-to-one lessons or a small group give you the most in the shortest time.
